The Time Machine series is Fender's own shrine to the heritage and legacy of the pioneers who made the company what it is today. The Fender Custom Shop has reached new heights of craftsmanship with its acclaimed Time Machine series, artfully crafting meticulous replicas using the same techniques and tooling used to create the originals all those years ago.
The Custom Shop proudly introduced an expanded selection of premium ''relic'' finishes that have been designed to replicate the worn-in vibe of a genuine vintage instrument. The Journeyman Relic finish delivers a used but not abused aesthetic, replicating the look of a guitar that has been played throughout the years while being well taken care of. Each finish is specially devised to capture the authenticity of the original-era, with unparalleled breathability and resonance.
The 1958 Journeyman Relic P-Bass features a 2-piece alder body in a beautiful wide-fade 2-tone sunburst, delivering a stunning aesthetic with a resonant performance. Alder is an excellent tonewood, producing balanced, resonant tones with plenty of clarity and midrange bite ideal for the versatile musician. The body delivers a decent amount of sustain, creating bright, sizzling highs, beautifully rounded lows, and a beefy midrange. Fender have used alder as their tonewood of choice since the 1950s, as the balanced response and slight upper middle definition makes it perfect for rock and blues playing.
The Journey Relic Precision Bass features a 1957 soft ‘’V’’ neck profile, taking the pronounced sharpness of the classic ‘’V’’ profile found on models from the 50s and softening it up to create a more rounded shape. This profile delivers a distinct comfort for the fretting-hand and is ideal for players with large hands whose thumb extends over the fingerboard’s edge. The maple tonewood provides this Custom Shop Fender with a beautifully bright characteristic, tightening up the overall tones and delivering plenty of cut and bite. Using maple for both the neck and fingerboard provides players with a sharp, clear punch when the strings are hit hard, while light to medium picking brings out the subtler tones of the maple.
A single custom shop ’62 Precision Bass pickup sits in the middle of the Fender Journeyman Relic P-Bass, delivering a faithful reproduction of a 1962 model in both performance and sound. Everything about this hand-wound pickup is designed to the same specs as the originals, from it enamel-coated magnet wire to produce warm, vintage-style tones, to its flush-mount pole pieces for an even string response. Fitted with alnico V magnets for a focused and dynamic performance, and equipped with a period correct-cloth output wire and fibre bobbin, this pickup gives the Custom Shop P-Bass the full blooming lows, punchy mids, and cleans highs of the bass that started it all.
Along with its amazing tone and looks, the Custom Shop Fender P-Bass also features a bone nut which adds to its classic aesthetic. The main purpose of using a bone nut, compared to modern materials, is the bone offers excellent resonance and sustain. A bone nut also delivers a very balanced tone and will last a long time. In addition, this type of nut naturally self-lubricates and helps the guitar to stay in tune for longer.
Debuted in late 1951, the Precision Bass guitar was not only Fender's first bass guitar, it was the world's first bass guitar and a new kind of instrument. The Precision Bass (often shortened to P-Bass), has spent well over half a century at the very heart of music everywhere. With its two-horned solid body and fretted neck, the Precision Bass profoundly revolutionised music. Reigning ever since as a must-have instrument, this elegantly simple and enormously powerful instrument is the worldwide standard for bass tonality, performance, reliability and overall excellence.
